Title: Baltimore's Painted Ladies, An Urban Tradition, Maryland, USA.
The term "Painted Ladies of Baltimore" refers to the city's charming, Victorian row houses that have been restored and painted in vibrant, contrasting colors, particularly in neighborhoods like Charles Village. The tradition of the "painted ladies" in aforementioned neighborhood began in 1988, and it was home-owner Lisa Simeone, the person who started the trend. A decade later after much discussion, on September of 1998, Charles Village neighbors had the idea to host a "painted ladies" contest; the Andy Casey Foundation joint the effort, and donated $20,000.00 cash price for the best looking painted lady. And so it was, that 1998 was the first year that the Charles Village neighborhood in Baltimore, had its first "Painted Ladies" contest. This practice is a celebration of Baltimore's unique architectural heritage (often dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries) and a testament to its community spirit. These facades transform standard city blocks into lively, expressive galleries, showcasing the area's ongoing commitment to colorful urban renewal and identity.
The original idea of "Painted Ladies" didn't start in Baltimore though, but instead, it has its origins in San Francisco, in the year 1963. And yes, the concept of "Painted Ladies started by a group of artists known as the "Colorists", under the leadership of artist Butch Cardin.
Today, the Painted Ladies of Baltimore have become a tapestry of urban history.
