Title: Einstein’s Ripples in the Fabric of Space-time
This artwork is part of my collection titled, "Luminarium: Cosmology, Celestial Mechanics & Eschatology", a series exhibited as a whole at the Latela Gallery in Washington D.C. This piece was inspired by Einstein’s Gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe. Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916, in his general theory of relativity. Einstein’s mathematics showed that massive accelerating objects (such as neutron stars or black holes orbiting each other) would disrupt space-time in such a way that ‘waves’ of distorted space would radiate from the source (like the movement of waves away from a stone thrown into a pond). These ripples travel at the speed of light through the Universe, carrying with them information about their cataclysmic origins, as well as invaluable clues of the nature of gravity itself. On September 14, 2015, LIGO detected gravitational waves originating 1.3 billion light years away, resulting from the collision of a massive pair of black holes. The discovery is said to go down in history as “one of the greatest scientific achievements,” given that it confirms Einstein’s ripples in space-time.
