  • This artwork is part of the series, "Icons: Las Virgencitas (Our Beloved Virgins)", a social critique examining the legacy of gender politics in relation to race, body image, cultural aesthetics, and the overall social issues, that  result in exploitative structures.

The collection in its enterity, is comprised of 12 mixed media portraits of sexualized virgins; only 9 are available for sale.

These virgins serve as ironic analogies, that convey the incongruity between pious religious standards, and the overtly sexualized female constantly promoted by mainstream media.

The thought-provoking images, reflect on the impact that Hollywood's conceptualization of womanhood has had, on the collective female psyche (within an intersectional framework).

The exhibit seeks to appeal to the audience’s critical analysis regarding womanhood in today’s society.  The body of work rearranges the historical perspective of the virtuous woman (as embodied by Virgin Mary), by juxtaposing it with ‘vile’ concepts, seeking to understand the evolution of womanhood in relation to chastity and the so-called unchaste.  The concept of the immaculate, as the primordial female social standard, is a persistent theme throughout the series.

This is the first portrait of the series, and it represents opposing ideas set forth by two of the most prominent female characters in the judeo-christian tradition: Eve & Mary, the sinner and the co-redeemer. Eve has the qualities of a 'bad apple" -she is easily lured by the serpent into disobedience, thus provoking Adam to sin as well. The blue cloak loosely covering the body symbolizes the penalization of nudity after self-realization; the serpent is the dual representation of the mainstream media and the male energy. The snake,  as the media, is the instigator of conflicting social behavior by means of technological platforms, hence, the iphone.
